Businesses could be certified 'green' in District
October 30, 2009
By the Voice
Ward 3 D.C. Council member Mary Cheh has announced plans to introduce legislation to make it possible for businesses to be certified "green" if they meet high standards for environmental protection.

According to a release, the bill would allow the District to designate a third-party entity to establish and assess environmental benchmarks in categories such as energy efficiency, water conservation and waste disposal. A business meeting or exceeding the benchmarks would be officially recognized as "green."

In the release, Cheh said the certification would "reward businesses for doing the right thing," while creating incentives for businesses to compete for the designation and "improve environmental appeal."
