Capitol HIll residents Retired Maj. Gen. David F. Wherley Jr. and his wife, Ann, were among those killed during Monday's crash on Metrorail's Red Line. Another Hill resident, D.C. Public Schools teacher Dennis Hawkins of Hill East, was also killed in the disaster.

The Wherleys, who had just become grandparents, lived on the 1300 block of Independence Avenue SE near Lincoln Park. Gen. Wherley had last year retired his post as the commanding officer of the DC National Guard.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of these three great individuals. Our community knew them as neighbors, teachers, mentors, and leaders within our armed forces. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends,” said Ward 6 D.C. Council member Tommy Wells on his Web site.

According to the National Guard, the Wherleys are survived by a son, David, a noncommissioned officer in the U.S. Army Golden Knights; a daughter, Betsy; and one grandchild.

CNN.com also reported on the Wherleys and The Washington Post reported extensively on all the victims.
