The Hillys are here
October 16, 2009
By HillChatter
Fellow local shoppers, voting time is here for the Hillys, this inaugural award that honors your favorite Capitol Hill businesses. There are four categories:
• Restaurant/Eatery/Cafe/Coffee Shop of the Year;
• Retailer of the Year;
• Service Provider of the Year; and
• Best New Business.

Vote today at champsdc.org.

Winners will be announced during a fete in Hill fashion, of course in Eastern Market’s North Hall on Nov. 20. E-mail champs@capitolhill.org or call 202-547-7788 for ticket information. HillChatter hopes to see you there. Don’t forget to vote!

Pub crawl with a veteran

Now here’s a tour HillChatter can get behind: The U.S. Capitol Historical Society will host a guided tour of famous Hill watering holes, with veteran guide Steve Livengood, who has been crawling in and out of his pubs since 1964 (his boasting, not ours!).

Dumbfound your family and friends with your knowledge of taverns such as The Monocle, The Dubliner and Capitol City Brewing Co. Libations and laughter are promised, and space is limited. Call 202-543-8919, ext. 13.

Is it wrong if we bring our own pint glass?

With the greatest of ease

Hat tip to JDLand.com, who reported that the city approved the Trapeze School New York at The Yards complex on 4th and Tingey streets SE. Apparently the request flew with the greatest of ease through the D.C. Zoning Commission, which unanimously approved the five-year deal.

You might recall, HillChatter reported in July that the school was looking for a permanent home since it’s being forced to relocate from its temporary digs at the old convention center site. We’re sure with the school now near Nationals Park, there might be some high-flying action in Near Southeast after all.

Eastern Market: The Movie

The film “Eastern Market: The Rebuilding,” which documents the fire that ravaged the landmark building and the subsequent reconstruction, will make its world premiere on Saturday. The 18-minute documentary was produced by Langley Bowers with help from the Capitol Hill Community Foundation’s Eastern Market Fund and the Overbeck History Project.

HillChatter will be there with popcorn in hand. But we’re wondering -- with the huge outpouring of support our lady market received after the April 30, 2007 fire, how did they fit it into only 18 minutes? Can’t wait to watch and find out.

Skee-Ball and beer

D.C. is home to many of the nontraditional sport leagues: kickball, bocce and others. Well, now add Skee-Ball to that mix. Yes, folks, rummage through that basement and find your best Skee-Ball gear, as the H Street Country Club, 1335 H St. NE, is now the home to the DC Amateur Skeeball League.

This carnival favorite can now be savored while tipping back a couple brews. The one-on-one tournaments are held every Sunday, and participants get drink discounts, culminating with the D.C.’s first-ever Skee-Ball Cup.

HillChatter was never good at Skee-Ball, but just might stop by to witness it for herself. Good luck, Skee-Ballers!
