White House honors Hill program
November 23, 2009
By HillChatter
Huge kudos to the Hill’s own Higher Achievement program, which received the Coming Up Taller Award from first lady Michelle Obama.

The award, which honors out-of-school organizations that provide arts and humanities programs to gifted, at-risk kids, was given at a White House ceremony Nov. 4. Higher Achievement, an after-school tutoring program, was one of 15 winners out of a pool of 400 nominees nationwide.
Congratulations to all involved and keep up the good work!

Here’s for saplings
It’s that time of year again. No, not for Aunt Milly’s eternal fruitcake, but for Trees for Capitol Hill’s annual fall tree planting.

Volunteers are needed to plant saplings Hillwide, so don’t shelve those garden gloves just yet. Interested persons should contact Margaret Missiaen at 202-546-8681.

Muppets take Union Station
Be sure to catch “Sesame Street — The Longest Street in the World” photo exhibit at Union Station to celebrate the beloved show’s 40th birthday. This remarkable collection shows Muppets worldwide — India, South Africa, Mexico, Egypt — making children laugh.

HillChatter was always a fan of Mr. Snuffleupagus. Bet you can’t give his first name without Googling it!

Dog park ideas
Hill Hounds wants users of the future Kingman Field Dog Park to give input on design elements for the new hound oasis. Survey participants also will be asked to rank preferred amenities, materials, furnishings, etc.

Go to hillhounds.com to find out more about the survey and how you can help.

Beagle HillChatter would like to see a statue of Snoopy.

Streetcars on the way
The streetcars destined for H Street have left their Czech assembly plant and are en route to the District. Don’t break out those tokens yet, kids, as the trans-Atlantic journey isn’t the end: The H Street and Benning Road construction is light years — well, not that many, but at least a year — from completion.

The cute rail cars are painted to match the Circulator buses.

Coat collection
The Washington Nationals are collecting clean, reusable coats and jackets in adult and kids sizes as part of their Warm Coat Drive. Keep this in mind for when you’re tidying up the house and that mess of a closet.

All articles can be dropped off at the stadium team store at N and Half streets SE until Dec. 11.

Eastern Market days
Here’s a reminder that Eastern Market will be closed on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, and Friday Nov. 27. It will resume normal hours on Saturday. So, be sure to pile up on all the pre- and post-Turkey Day gorging needs!

By the way, Mr. Snuffleupagus’ first name is Aloysius.
