| | | Northeast Capitol Hill (ANC 6A) | | November 23, 2009 | | | | At its Nov. 12 meeting, the commission:
• heard the new Ward 6 community outreach and service specialist, Alex Rotan, introduce himself.
• heard an announcement that the dedication of the H Street mural at 1010 H St. will be Nov. 21 at 3 p.m. A reception will be held at Sova, 1359 H St. NE, after the ceremony.
• heard commissioner Kelvin Robinson announce that construction at Eastern High School, which is under renovation, is going well.
• heard commissioner Bill Schultheiss discuss problems with the vacant property at 1400 Maryland Ave. NE. Neighbors have complained that despite a recent city-run “fix-it” in the area, the property is still littered with debris and hosts homeless people almost nightly. The property is set to become a gas station, though some residents have voiced their opposition to that plan. Ward 6 community outreach and service specialist Alex Rotan said the city is working with the Metropolitan Police Department and the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs to clean up the property.
• heard commission chair Joe Fengler announce that the commission is still working out some “minor” things with the developers of the H Street Connection project on H Street between 8th and 10th streets.
• heard commissioner David Holmes announce that two formerly derelict properties at 8th and C streets and 12th and C streets have been renovated and sold.
• heard Mary Beatty, the chair of the commission’s alcoholic beverage licensing committee, suggest that the commission should consider pursuing a moratorium on tavern liquor licenses long the H Street corridor. Beatty made the suggestion in response to recent incidents at bars on H Street, in particular a reported stabbing at the H Street Martini Lounge.
• unanimously voted to support a Board of Zoning adjustment application to allow a second-story addition to the property at 1212 Wylie St. NE.
• unanimously voted to fund a $3,500 grant for the Maury Elementary School PTA, which will use the money to buy a sound system for the school’s multipurpose room.
• voted 4-2-1 — with commissioners Mary Beatty and Kelvin Robinson opposing and commissioner Raphael Marshall abstaining — to pass a resolution allowing several commissioners to testify in front of the D.C. Public Charter School Board against the proposed location of the AppleTree Institute, a public charter school, at 138 12th St. NE. | | | | | Log in to comment on this article |
